John 19

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation day, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was a high day,) pleaded with Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

31 This day was Preparation day. The next day was a special Sabbath day. The Jewish leaders did not want the bodies to stay on the cross on the Sabbath day. So they asked Pilate to order that the legs of the men be broken. And they asked that the bodies be taken down from the crosses.

31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was a high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

31 Now it was the day of getting ready for the Passover, and so that the bodies might not be on the cross on the Sabbath (because the day of that Sabbath was a great day), the Jews made a request to Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

31 Since it was the preparation day, ⓐ the Jews did not want the bodies ⓑ to remain on the cross ⓒ on the Sabbath ⓓ (for that Sabbath was a special [7] day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. ⓔ

31 Since it was the Preparation Day, the Jews did not want to leave the bodies on the crosses during the Sabbath, for that was a particularly important Sabbath. So they asked Pilate to have the men"s legs broken and the bodies removed.
